Gleb Savchenko quits Strictly Come Dancing

He may have only made his debut in last year’s season of Strictly Come Dancing but Gleb Savchenko has announced he has quit the BBC One entertainment show due to “family commitments”.

The Russian heartthrob became a fan favourite, partly due to his looks but also thanks to the imaginative dance moves. Who can forget the “Gleb Special”?

Announcing the news on Twitter, Savchenko stated that he “thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the last series of Strictly Come Dancing […] but due to family commitments [he] won’t be returning to the show for the next series.”

Tristan McManus also announced he was leaving the show. The cheeky Irish dancer has been on the show for two seasons, firstly being paired with Jennifer Gibney from Mrs Brown’s Boys and last year partnering former pop star and current “loose woman” Jamelia.

The pair’s departure comes after Ola Jordan and current champion Aliona Vilani announced their retirements from the show at the end of last year. Following news of her her pregnancy with Ben Cohen, Kristina Rihanoff also announced she would not be returning to the show.

This means that there will be a few new faces joining the Saturday evening ratings winner.

So far, three new dancers have been announced. They are Gorka Marquez, Oksana Platero and Katya Jones.

Jones is a former World Latin Dance Champion while Marquez has stared in the stage show Burn The Floor. Platero will be used to the rigours of the show as she has starred in five series of the American version of “Strictly”, Dancing With The Stars.

Joanne Clifton, who partnered Scott Mills in her first year on the show but only appeared as a show dancer last season, returns to the show to partner a new celebrity.

Other professionals who have been confirmed as returning to the show are Brendan Cole, Pasha Kovalev, Aljaž Škorjanec, Giovanni Pernice, Natalie Lowe, Janette Manrara and Oti Mabuse, and Kevin and Karen Clifton.

Anton du Beke is also back after surprising many viewers by making it to last year’s final with Katie Graham, having normally being paired with some of the worst celebrities in previous years, including Judy Murray and Ann Widdecombe.

The new series will return in the autumn.
