After the performance of his life in the preliminaries there was a huge shock for Team GB diving fans as Tom Daley finished last in the semi finals of the Men’s 10m platform diving scoring just 403.25 points
Daley never really seemed to get going and couldn’t repeat any of form that he found in the preliminaries where he scored an Olympic Record score of 571.85 points.
It was his second and third dives that left Daley with too much work to do, scoring just 54.00 points for his “firework” dive, the forward 3½ somersaults with 1 twist, and 47.25 points for the armstand back 3 somersaults.
Despite scoring 91.80 points for the reverse 3½ somersaults Daley left himself needing over 100 points in his final dive. The pressure seemed to be too much and Daley’s poor execution of the dive produced a poor entry and a score of just 50.40 points.
Following the dive Daley immediately sought comfort from coach Jane Figueiredo knowing it was all over.
Speaking to the BBC, a clearly emotional Daley said:
“I truly am heartbroken because I really do feel like I’m in the peak physical condition and I could really go out there and I could’ve won tonight and it’s really really hard to accept how it went today.
“Tokyo is definitely in my sights more than ever now.”
Daley wasn’t the only diver to make mistakes with reigning Olympic Champion from London, David Boudia, leaving it until the last dive of the competition to ensure he progressed to the final.
It looks as though it will be down to the Chinese divers Chen Aisen and Qiu Bo to fight it out for gold and silver with Chen scoring 559.90 points, 55 points clear of his compatriot in second place.
Other competitors to keep an eye out for are Ivan Garcia of Mexico who includes the worlds most difficult dive in his repertoire and the experienced German Sascha Klein who just missed out on 10m synchro bronze medal, finishing in fourth with partner Patrick Hausding, just behind Daley and Dan Goodfellow.
Daley leaves Rio with a bronze medal in the 10m synchro and an Olympic record but he will undoubtedly be devastated to have missed out on the final.
The final of the competition takes place at 8pm on Saturday.
