WOW Air supports LGBT rights with new plane

WOW Air, the Icelandic low cost carrier, has announced that the newest aircraft to be added to its fleet will show display its support for LGBT rights. The first of WOW Air’s three Airbus A330 wide body aircraft has been named TF-GAY and Founder and CEO, Skúli Mogensen, says that they thought it would be appropriate to name their first plane to fly to San Francisco TF-GAY, in a nod to the city’s queer history.

The new plane forms part of WOW Air’s strategy to extend into the long-haul market with flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

In an interview with GayIceland, Mogensen said one of the pilots came to him with the idea and that he “thought it was a cool idea so we went ahead with it.”

“We wholeheartedly support queer people’s fight for rights. Just as we support equal rights for everybody, no matter their gender, religion, ethnicity or culture. By making it possible for everybody to travel with us, we’ll hopefully manage to make the world slightly smaller, and better.”

When asked if he was worried about any negative reaction as a result of the new name, Morgensen said, “If I were worried or scared of what people might say about me or what I do, then WOW air wouldn’t exist.”

He went on to say, “Prejudice and narrow-mindedness are usually the result of ignorance and an inferiority complex. So such views judge themselves.”

The name of the plane is actually the plane’s registration and builds on the company’s tradition of registering their planes to create a family. Previous planes have carried the registrations TF-MOM, TF-DAD, TF-SIS, TF-BRO, TF-SON and TF-KID.

“WOW is basically MOM upside down and everybody loves their mom! Since day one, we’ve emphasised joy and friendliness in our services because we want everybody to feel welcome in the WOW family. And we think TF-GAY fits right in with our modern family concept.”
