From Captain Janeway and Wonder Woman to the Pink Power Ranger and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the gay community loves examples of kick-ass women. That’s why we were so excited to hear that for the first time since the event’s creation, WWE announced there will be a Women’s Royal Rumble match at the Royal Rumble Pay-Per-View event.
The event will join the growing list of landmark moments in the evolution of women’s wrestling. What started with the “Give Divas a Chance” hashtag has led to the female superstars main eventing Pay-Per-Views as well as the first ever women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match.
This Sunday 30 women will enter the ring in the hope of becoming the winner of the first women’s Royal Rumble and earning a title opportunity at Wrestlemania.
Taking a look at the current women’s rosters on both Raw and Smackdown, it’s clear that there aren’t enough wrestlers to fill all 30 slots.
There are 22 women across Raw and Smackdown, including the current champions, Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair. It’s unlikely the champions will feature considering the prize of winning the Royal Rumble is a Championship opportunity at Wrestlemania.
Two former WWE In-Ring talents that have returned to the WWE in recent years are Maria Kanellis and Maryse. However, they can be ruled out from showing up at the Royal Rumble because both are pregnant.
Also, following the tragic news suggesting that Paige has been forced to retire from in-ring competition due to medical reasons, WWE will need to fill another space in the 30 woman list.
That means that there are at least 11 entrants to be decided. Continue to page two where we run down who we think may make up the numbers.
